Short-lived Hazel Grove park-and-ride to become ambulance hub

Stockport Council has drawn up proposals to redevelop the 3.4-acre car park off Buxton Road less than a decade after the Stagecoach facility opened.

The existing park-and-ride facility opened in 2015 in a bid to ease congestion on the A6. However, it is described in a planning statement as “underutilised and not commercially viable”.

The council has submitted a pair of applications for the two-phase redevelopment of the site.

The phase one application seeks full consent for the creation of a 10,000 sq ft ambulance station and associated ambulance, staff and visitor parking on the 1.5-acre eastern portion of the site.

Stockport is also requesting outline permission for phase two, which would see the station expanded into a hub on the remaining two acres.

The facility would be operated by North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust. The Trust will relocate from Travis Brow in Stockport town centre, which is “dated and spatially constrained”, according to planning consultant Paul Butler Associates.

It is envisaged that the phase one will be completed by 2024, with the second phase following around 2029.

Aew Architects is leading on design and Urban Green is the landscape consultant for the project and is also advising on ecology, biodiversity net gain, and arboriculture. CBRE is the project manager and Kennedy Redford is the structural engineer.

Oh not. I use that park n ride regularly. Just the way to avoid the A6 jams. I can’t believe it isn’t better used. Fantastic 192 service to connect with it.

Personally think it should be a Metrolink Park and Ride with a station on the viaduct.

Completely useless, no good for those living on the north side of Stockport, not central enough.
Maybe if the busses Stockport bound went into Stepping Hill hospital it might be used a lot more.

Very much welcomed, very exciting

By Mr D

Not a good idea. Leave it as it is.

Some people use it when they get bus 192 toManchester to work, visiting Manchester or Manchester royal infirmary . Other people will use it also. As a link to other places .

Needs spaces available for park and ride

By Carolyn Haslam

Excellent idea to link it to the Metrolink and have a station on the viaduct. This should be considered seriously.

Leave it be. Sick of all the over development. Trying to soend tax payers money again. How about using that money to fix the footpaths properly!!

We need a metro link to get the roads clearer

what’s the point? it’s no use having ambulances when they’re queuing up at the hospital because they can’t hand over patients due to understaffed A &E ?

By Susan Fergusson

We still need a park & ride what is the point of another Ambulance station when the ambulances already have a congestion at the Hospitals

By Anonymous

Parking is impossible at Stepping Hill Hospital because if the building work , the Park and Ride is the only option at the moment .
The hospital parking won’t be any better when the building work is finally completed .
Can the park and ride space be reduced to accommodate the ambulance station?

If it’s anything like the new houses they we’re putting up near park and ride it won’t happen what a mess they have made of them it’s scandalous

I use the park & ride a lot for the 192 and will be sorry to see it go

By Christine Dyer

Good, something worth while coming out of a white elephant !!

Can’t park and ride as well as Ambulance service be on same site but obviously be with separate entrances and exits. We need park and ride for the hospital with a dedicated shuttle service to and from Stepping Hill please.

So where is Stockports Councils commitment to a Greener plant

By B Thorley

Can’t understand why ,Park and ride one of the best ideas Stockport Council came up with

I used to work from that site as it was a BT depot..The world moves on..Guess the old site in Travis Brow will be part of the Manchester mayor development..Oops Cheshire.Lol.

In light of the Lyme Car Park planning application, this appears to be very short-sighted. Rather than entertaining ‘overspill’ parking areas or the tabled application, how about we retain the P&R, be stricter on advising Lyme Park visitors to use the P&R (via TfGM digital info boards?) because the car park is full, and try harder to make sustainable transport the natural choice?

By Active Travel Trev

Please, please leave some area of the site for hospital parking

As a pensioner I use this park n ride often . Surely room for both services
